XFS crashed on me, big time. Like my machine no longer booted type of crashing on me. I was running it pretty hard, but nothing that I think should hurt Linux. Normally, I divide my filesystem up into partitions, basically to spread the risk and to allow distributions to change without risking the data in the home directory. With my new computer (and smaller hard drive) I decided that I couldn't handle the inefficiency. Now, when something died, everything died.

My frist stop was the System Rescue CD. This had been recommended to me before, but I hadn't used it. Turns out that the PPC version doesn't include any of the XFS repair utilities, so it was no good.

I then tried to burn a Ubuntu CD that I could boot off of, and try to get things working from there. Turns out that the disk names in the ISOs include an "/", which kills the Mac OS X disk utility. I tried Gnoppix who now have a PowerPC version but the same forward slash problem exists in their ISO.

I then found a page about burning an Ubuntu CD in Mac OS X which turned out to be very helpful. What is even more helpful is the link to the Mac OS X compiled cdrecord that is in the comments. This is important because I didn't have fink installed. Also, I made a couple coasters -- turns out I had to set the CD speed to 8x. Not sure why, because the drive is faster, but I got a CD in the end.

Long story short -- my filesystem is happier now.
