Last night I committed the first version of my "Blur Edge" extension which will copy an object a specified number of times, and then inset/offset the copies. Then, by dividing the total opacity among them, a blurred edge effect is created. You can see an example here:

This doesn't mean, by anyone's imagination, that effects are finished. But, it does show you can start to do cooler stuff with them.
