I've now coded a basic plug-in to start importing GIMP gradients into Inkscape. Take a look:

See, now I wouldn't make that gradient on my own! This is good for users because the GIMP's gradient editor is much better than Inkscape's, so more complex gradients can be made in the GIMP and imported into Inkscape.

The other really cool thing is that this now uses plug-ins. The GIMP gradient plug-in is actually a seperately compiled binary that gets loaded into Inkscape when it is requested. This is a big step for Inkscape and starts the process of reducing the total size of the core Inkscape build! One small plug-in for Inkscape, one giant leap twoards modularity.
